Although the Mother India empire spreads itself across cafés, delis and curry houses in Glasgow and Edinburgh, the original Westminster Terrace branch is the daddy. Deceptively accommodating, it operates on three floors – a contemporary-styled basement, small ground-level space and a larger, Edwardian-retro dining room upstairs. Canoodling couples and office parties can happily co-exist here. The kitchen serves up “some of the best Indian food in UK”, according to one vociferous fan: you might start with haddock, green chilli and ginger pakoras, before a robust dish of baked chicken stuffed with smoked aubergines, Punjabi-style lamb with fresh okra or aloo sag dosa (a rice-flour pancake stuffed with spinach and potato, with lentil sambar on the side). Menus cover all bases, weekend lunch is especially good value and special fixed-price deals can be tailored to your own needs.
