Square Meal Review of Min Jiang at the Royal Garden Hotel ?

Boasting a spectacular 10th-floor view stretching from Kensington Gardens to The Shard, Min Jiang is so much more than a flashy vista – it’s also rated as a “landmark” for posh, budget-blowing Chinese food in London. The interior keeps things simple with white tablecloths, wooden screens and classical pottery, but bag a window seat and you’ll hardly notice the decor. The signature wood-roasted Beijing duck is a must (order 24 hours in advance) and comes in three servings – thin slivers of skin dipped in caster sugar counts among the guiltiest treats in town. Elsewhere, steamed scallops with fermented chilli are delightfully spicy, while mains hop around China’s culinary provinces – we love the sticky, rich rib-eye in black bean sauce, with tender broccoli in salted fish sauce. Service is “brisk”, and the exuberant, knowledgeable sommelier is bound to put a smile on your face.

  1. Nestled up high in the rather faded and archaic looking Royal Garden hotel is Min Jiang. A proper old-fashioned yet luxurious Chinese restaurant that boasts stunning views over Hyde Park. Layers of lush greenery with the magnificent London skyline behind, that for once lets the natural landscape take centre stage. This is no Hutong, although what we ate was just as great, the restaurant is quite dated and more informal with a family atmosphere, although several manly business dinners were going on around us.   1. I have been truly spoiled for this years birthday celebrations, the finale was with my closest friends at Min Jiang. Boasting views from the 10th floor overlooking Kensington gardens. The lofty restaurant aims to please, booking a table of 8 we waited patiently by the bar.

    When I was growing up in Port Elizabeth in the 1970s and 1980s, although it was a wonderful place to live, let’s just say it was not exactly a culinary hotspot. Hot restaurants du jour included the Hungry I (steaks and seafood), El Cid (steaks and seafood), The Coachman (more steaks and seafood), and La Fontaine (a 70′s extravaganza of a menu including grapefruit cocktail, smoked salmon with Melba toast, Wiener schnitzel and, of course, steak with a green peppercorn sauce). Ethnic food was not huge and mostly reflected the demographic – and because we had a large Chinese population, we did at least have Chinese restaurants....
