Everyone talks about the mesmerising setting, with fabulous views across Kensington Gardens to the City’s ‘spires and shards’, but Min Jiang also serves up some of the best Chinese food in town,
according to its many devotees (us among them). Mirrored panels, red lacquer, wooden screens and classical pottery set the tone in the plush dining room, while the menu takes a trip around China’s
culinary provinces. Start with some Cantonese dim sum – perhaps char-siu puffs or ‘truly special’ stick tofu with honey and sesame – before tackling the ‘must-have’ wood-roast Beijing duck,
presented in three servings, including slivers of crisp neck skin dipped in sugar. Claypot venison is vigorously spiced with Szechuan pepper, and you can cool down with an esoteric combo of pear
and white snow ear fungus. Cracking service and ‘one hell of a wine list’ complete a mightily impressive package.

Nestled up high in the rather faded and archaic looking Royal Garden hotel is Min Jiang. A proper old-fashioned yet luxurious Chinese restaurant that boasts stunning views over Hyde Park. Layers of lush greenery with the magnificent London skyline behind, that for once lets the natural landscape take centre stage. This is no Hutong, although what we ate was just as great, the restaurant is quite dated and more informal with a family atmosphere, although several manly business dinners were going on around us. I’m meant to set the scene and describe the feel and decor of the restaurant, but I can’t wait to talk about...

I have been truly spoiled for this years birthday celebrations, the finale was with my closest friends at Min Jiang. Boasting views from the 10th floor overlooking Kensington gardens. The lofty restaurant aims to please, booking a table of 8 we waited patiently by the bar.The signature legendary Beijing duck was a must for me, constantly taunted by my foodie friends. The duck needs to be ordered 45 minutes in advanced. For starters we had a selection of dim sum, xiao long bao, and cheung fun...

When I was growing up in Port Elizabeth in the 1970s and 1980s, although it was a wonderful place to live, let’s just say it was not exactly a culinary hotspot. Hot restaurants du jour included the Hungry I (steaks and seafood), El Cid (steaks and seafood), The Coachman (more steaks and seafood), and La Fontaine (a 70′s extravaganza of a menu including grapefruit cocktail, smoked salmon with Melba toast, Wiener schnitzel and, of course, steak with a green peppercorn sauce). Ethnic food was not huge and mostly reflected the demographic – and because we had a large Chinese population, we did at least have Chinese restaurants....

Min Jiang restaurant that launched in 2008 to excellent reviews and was awarded three AA Rosettes in 2009. Though the main star of the show here is usually the duck, Min Jiang is renowned for its range of dim sum and spicy Sichuan dishes. On our visit we were lucky enough to sample the dum sum platter. It always makes a nice change when you know the dumplings have been both hand made and wrapped...
