Mark Hix’s ‘Englishman in New York’ brand works well in the context of this Young Fogey-ish lounge, located in the basement of his City chicken-and-steak restaurant. The offer broadly echoes that at Hix Soho and Hixter Bankside. Consultant mixologist Nick Strangeway majors in Tanqueray-based ideas such as Golden Eagle (gin, apricot brandy, Cocchi Americano and orange bitters topped with cider) and Just in Thyme – a gin sour made with Hix’s own pale ale reduction (£9.75). Other best of Blighty bases include Somerset cider brandy, Nyetimber fizz and Black Cow Pure Milk vodka.
