SquareMeal Review of Loch Fyne Bath

Loch Fyne bucks the trend among national chains by offering a food & wine experience well above its high-street station. Selections from its recent menus such as hake with samphire, smoked salmon ‘sashimi-style’ with wasabi & soy, or ‘bradan rost’ with couscous salad, mango & coriander are dishes you might expect in flash big-city eateries – not in simply attired, accessible town-centre restaurants where ‘the food is reasonably priced & generously served’. This chain also caters for more traditional tastes, witness whitebait, mackerel pâté, fish & chips or fisherman’s pie alongside the group’s raison d’être – sustainably sourced oysters, mussels & langoustines from Loch Fyne itself. Most of the globetrotting wine list is available by the glass, with credible, fish-friendly pours including Albariño & Grüner Veltliner.

Horrible!

Today we had the worst muscles ever and I am slightly worried if my kids will digest them without complications. I asked the waitress to have my son's heated up again as his muscles were slimier than ours and clearly undercooked. She tried to argue that they are open, hence suitable for human consumption, so I had to insist. No alternative food was offered, despite our disappointment and no apology at all. She acted rather irritated ...
The cream sauce was watery, with floating raw onions and sliced garlic - absolutely discusting! No mayonnaise on the side, just a tiny slice of brioche and french fries. Nothing special about the latter! If we escape as a family without any stomach aches, I will consider ourselves lucky.
It is really a shame as this used to be my favourite restaurant in town a couple of years ago. Something went very wrong: from the hygiene in the WCs to the quality of the food and service.
