Holding longstanding regulars in thrall with its "great atmosphere", starry clientele and exemplary cooking, the London outpost of this small but jet-setting chain pays tribute to the Nice original. Whatever the weather, the Mediterranean cooking means summer is always on the table at La Petite Maison – as are a bottle of olive oil and, in lieu of flowers, one or two ripe fruits of the sun. Expect to invest fairly heavily in dishes such as salt cod croquettes with red pepper relish, roast black-leg chicken or milk-fed Lozère lamb with spiced couscous, paired with wine from an all-French list populated by serious producers. Finish with pain perdu and spice ice cream or the icy shock of lemon sorbet doused with vodka. "Still such a treat", enthuses a fan.

They also have outposts in Paris, Cannes, Dubai, Beirut and soon Miami. London in Winter may not have the same ambience as the French Riviera capital but the cosy bistro brings a similar sophistication with its chic interiors. The place is smart and fancy enough for special occasions but it&s also quite relaxed...
