Square Meal Review of L'Etranger ?

Half sultry French mistress, half mysterious geisha, this sexy and sophisticated Franco-Japanese jet-setter is “small enough to feel intimate, without seeming intrusive”. Chain-mail curtains, dark furniture and mirrored walls set the scene as suited-and-booted South Ken high-rollers sip grande marque Champagne from a staggering selection of exclusive labels. Meanwhile, Alain Ducasse-trained Jérôme Tauvron’s fabulously presented food mixes French haute cuisine with Japanese ingredients and a liberal sprinkling of luxury – witness tuna tartare with Baerii caviar or foie gras parfait with pickled carrots. Prices are unashamedly high, but dishes such as 9th-grade Wagyu sirloin with globe artichoke purée and parsley ‘chlorophyll’ or the much-fancied caramelised black cod with miso and sushi rice generally deliver on their promise. To finish, tarte Tatin nods to Tauvron’s French heritage, and the award-winning 1,600-bin wine list is shot through with wondrous possibilities for big-spending oenophiles.
