With a string of Michelin stars to his name, Joël Robuchon offers stellar gastronomy at the London outpost of his restaurant empire. “This experience was a delight!” declares one happy diner, while others praise “technically brilliant” cooking, “amazing attention to detail” and “fabulously presented food”. Thrill-seekers should head for the counter overlooking a theatrical open kitchen in the dramatic ground-floor L’Atelier; upstairs, La Cuisine offers a more formal setting for business or large groups. In either case you’ll be treated to a series of breathtaking small plates showcasing complex flavours, such as richly braised ox cheek pointed up with a daikon and shiso purée; the signature caviar ‘imperial’ (salmon tartare and oscietra caviar mischievously served in a tin with a pearl spoon); or creamy foie gras and chicken broth ‘custard’ balanced by crunchy bites of vegetable. Faultless wine matches from the engaging sommelier team enhance the dishes, while polished servers are “very professional without being too intrusive”. “Not cheap but worth every penny.”

    New Yorker Meets London :: A lunch with L'Atelier de Joel Robuchon | New Yorker Meets London

    I have been to L’Atelier many times before, but only to make use of the quiet tucked away cocktail bar upstairs. I would sink into one of the comfy fluffy sofa chairs to celebrate the end of a fun packed week with some friends. Sometimes, the bartender would even make a cocktail personalised for each guest, mine was a bubblegum vodka with white chocolate, it was incredible!

    This was the first time I have returned to dine here. I knew that L’Atelier had two Michelin stars, but lost its second one in 2013, so I was interested to find out what kind of experience awaits me...

Joel Robuchon

Born in Poitiers in 1945, Joel Robuchon originally intended to join the priesthood, but family difficulties forced him to find work & at 15 he took on an apprenticeship at the Relais de Poitiers. In 1966 he became official chef to La Tour de France, where he learnt a variety of diverse regional techniques. At 28, he became head chef at Harmony-Lafayette, overseeing 3,000 meals a day. In 1981 he launched Jamin in Paris & within three years had received three Michelin stars. In 1996 he left his Parisian flagship, but maintained the direction of L'Atelier de Joel Robuchon in Tokyo. He opened another L'Atelier in Paris in 2003 & has since established outlets in Las Vegas, New York & London.
