Square Meal Review of L'Anima ?

Readers lap up L’Anima’s ‘simply stylish’ surrounds and applaud chef Francesco Mazzei’s generous, big-hearted Calabrian cooking. The ‘spotless’ interior screams top-end City – all expensive marble, glass, Eames-style white leather seats and ‘magnificent lighting’ – and prices are at the top end, too, but there is some serious skill on show in the kitchen. Peerless pasta might feature vibrant fettuccine with pea, broad beans and black truffle or a lasagne ‘pastachina’ made to Mamma Mazzei’s own recipe. Elsewhere, starters of creamy burrata with smoked aubergine and red-onion jam, or battuta di manzo (steak tartare) are perfectly executed, while the signature dish of Scotch Black beef piled high atop a piece of bone marrow lets the quality of each ingredient sing. Service is ‘attentive but not intrusive’, and the little extras such as live music in the evenings,and a brilliant regional wine list make this easily the ‘best Italian in the City’.

  1. Taste of London is upon us yet again. We’ve been every year since 2007 (oh dear, we’re such pigs!). Like Christmas it comes once a year, and like Christmas you start looking forward to it well in advance of the actual due date. Sometimes it disappoints (too many people & bad weather), most of the times it delivers on expectations. We couldn’t care less about the events (if you ask me, they should free up the extra space and invite even more restaurants to participate), but the food…well, that’s a different story all together...

    vialaporte :: L’Anima // The City // London

    In the heart of The City, just beside most major financial institutions, is L’Anima. This incredibly elegant establishment combines an immaculate restaurant with a more relaxing area designed to enjoy drinks and nibbles. Instead of using the chic transparent chairs from the dining room, superb white leather couches are on offer; the ones you can only dream of fitting into your flat. Enormous glass windows are certainly another detail which makes L’Anima one of the most gorgeous places on the East side of London...

    Eat Cook Explore :: Grana Padano Week At L’Anima

    Squashed into a blistering hot kitchen on a really hot summers day is not my idea of fun but watching 2 hot chefs up close cook a couple of spectacular dishes really was.

    The two hot Italian Chefs were Francesco Mazzei or L’Anima in The City and Davide Oldani of the One Star Michelin Restaurant D’O. They are both Ambassadors for London’s first Grana Padano Week...

Francesco Mazzei

Francesco Mazzei L'Anima, near Liverpool Street, represents Francesco Mazzei's first starring role as a chef-patron in the capital. Born in southern Italy in 1973, he opened his own seafood restaurant there aged 18, before working in the military service as pastry chef to an admiral. His first job in London came in 1996 as commis chef in the Terrace at the Dorchester, rising to sous chef before taking on a similar position in the Michelin-starred Eden Hotel in Rome. Between 2002 & 2006 he fronted eateries for Alan Yau, as well as the Santin & Hambro families, before launching St Alban on Regent Street for Wolseley owners Chris Corbin & Jeremy King. L’Anima sees Mazzei move away from the more generic Italian food of St Alban to specialise in the Calabrian, Sicilian and southern Italian food of his upbringing.
