Square Meal Review of Koffmann's at The Berkeley ?

French master Pierre Koffmann is still at the top of his game, and lovers of “grande cuisine” are thrilled by this cheery, split-level dining room with its pastel shades, smart trappings and a riot of sunny flowers straight out of a Van Gogh canvas. “It may lack razzmatazz”, but compensates with an “incredibly friendly” vibe and quiet professionalism – not to mention a serious all-French wine list and a roll call of “punchy” flavours from M. Koffmann’s back catalogue. Specials change daily, but look to the main menu for near-faultless signature dishes: chicory adds some earthy, bitter accents to hot crusted foie gras, daube of ox cheek is braised to melting softness, and the legendary pied de cochon appears in all its sticky glory – slow-cooked, boned and stuffed with sweetbreads and morels. After that, puds such as tarte au citron and dark chocolate mousse have their heart in the 80s, but no one minds a jot.

  1. After having visited Koffman’s before last year (see post) and feeling very satisfied with the meal, I was keen to try it again this winter.

    It's not often you get the chance to eat at the restaurant of a genuine culinary legend, but chef Pierre Koffmann is just that. His first restaurant, La Tante Claire, opened in Chelsea in 1977 and went on to gain three Michelin stars, which it held for 15 years until it moved location to the Berkeley Hotel in Knightsbridge. There the restaurant continued until 2003 when Koffmann retired from cooking (or so he thought).     With a new year, time to try something I had been hearing about for a long time. No, it’s not what you are thinking. It’s a new restaurant!

Pierre Koffmann

Pierre Koffmann came to Britain from Gascony in 1970, subsequently working at Le Gavroche and The Waterside Inn before opening La Tante Claire, which launched in Chelsea in 1977. Later, he relocated the restaurant (complete with its three Michelin stars) to The Berkeley, where it remained until 2003. In 2009, he was tempted out of retirement for a ‘pop-up’ at Selfridges, after which he returned to The Berkeley to open Koffmann’s.
