SquareMeal Review of J & A Café

Cath Kidston herself would be hard pressed to create a more immediately endearing little eatery than J&A Café. If the idea of wild flowers in milk bottles, enamel mugs, jolly painted chairs and bunting strung across a quiet courtyard sounds twee, don't be put off: this place keeps a laid-back, urban edge that befits its off-Clerkenwell Road setting. The cooking and baking is wholesome stuff, based on good ingredients, so expect superior fry-ups with organic eggs and Clonakilty black pudding for breakfast, top-notch sandwiches at lunch, and stunning cakes for tea that your granny would be proud of (chocolate and Guinness with a dollop of thick cream sticks in the mind). Specials include a daily pie, tart, stew and soup. Drinkers have a choice of beers, Breton cider, a few wines and cocktails.

We go often for lunch, but also great for dinner & drinks. Beautiful decor and ambience with fantastic home cooked style food. Healthy, hearty & consistently excellent. Also, amazing cakes.particularly the Guinness Cake!

Eggs Benedict came on brown bread not English muffins and were sent back. Pancakes did not come with crispy bacon, because back bacon was used instead of streaky. On another occasion, pancakes came which were so hard in places (they are pre-cooked and kept in the fridge) that they were inedible.

absolutely terrible
We have looked forward to trying j&a for ages – we live in clerkenwell – and went there with some visitors from India. It was appalling. We ordered salads which arrived with horrid dry couscous (one person is gluten-free), some wet leaves and two tomatoes for £10.50. The eggs benedict and the coffee were both cold. We were upstairs which is really tatty & cold with sticky tables. The door was hanging off the upstairs toilet and the main bathroom was dirty. Why would anyone go here when there are such amazing places round the corner – Workshop Coffee and The Modern Pantry. Don't go.
