SquareMeal Review of Gow's

Bronze Award

With more than 125 years on the clock, Gow’s is a City diner of the redoubtable old school – although it still pulls in the crowds with its reputation for top-notch fish and a bustling, business-friendly feel. Don’t come here expecting cutting-edge design – the downstairs dining room is as ‘retro’ as it gets (and not in an ironic way), but that’s the way the regulars like it. The food is “exceedingly good”, according to one happy customer – a treasure trove of fishy pleasures taking in everything from Brixham crab and prawn terrine or Cognac-laced lobster bisque to pan-fried skate wing with capers and brown butter or good old-fashioned fish pie with French beans. Lunchtime sees groaning platters of shellfish, as well as charcuterie and cheese boards, while the compact wine list has plenty of fish-friendly selections.

thoroughly enjoyable lunch
It is sadly rare today to find quality service combined with excellent cooking. However they seem to manage it at Gow's in spades. It is never going to win a Michelin star - no deconstructed Bolivian lychees here - just well sourced ingredients very well cooked. You get smoked salmon with flavour, not bland cardboard and scallops that have not been turned into shoe leather through overcooking. Portions are generous as are the staff with their help and sociability: Their performance is a credit to their training. If I was forced to raise a negative point it would be the price of the wine which is on the toppy side, but then I suppose you get what you pay for! Overall, a wonderful meal: it certainly ticked all the boxes for us!

If you ask me, I think some of the people on this review page must just like a good whinge! I too have created a profile on this site just to post a review of Gows, however, my experience was wonderful! I dragged my new husband out for what was meant to be a quick meal after work but we stayed for hours as we were enjoying ourselves so much. We ate in the bar/bistro upstairs and got a lovely window table. The service was quick and very friendly, the food was marvellous,I went for the Lobster burger (WOW) which came with a free glass of champagne! James went for the Monkfish (another WOW) and we went through a couple of bottles of a wine I've never heard of before but fell in love with. One of the deserts we wanted was unavailable which really wasn't a problem but the manager still gave us our coffees and another drink on the house when there was really no need. Such a nice guy. There was a great buzz to the place, not too loud, with plenty of light and nice touches around the place like candles and flowers. we both felt very comfortable. One of the ladies toilets was out of service but I'm sure that's temporary. Will be eating there again.
