SquareMeal Review of Gifto's Lahore Karahi

Despite its capacious proportions, this glass-fronted canteen is often full to bursting with gregarious Anglo-Asian locals, who are treated to a sizzling floorshow as enthusiastic chefs wield karahi pots, sear skewers of meat, & slap rotis into tandoor ovens. Prices on the huge menu are equally keen, with a whole tandoori chicken just £6.90, & most curries (here termed ‘Lahore dishes’) at £7.90. Chicken tikka masala & other staples are all present & correct, but there’s ample scope for experimentation: try a Mumbai-style crunchy ‘chat’ snack to start, or sample the rich gravy of the paya (sheep’s trotter) curry. The freshly prepared tandoori breads are especially good (garlic & chilli naan, for instance), & the knickerbocker glory-like falooda is a house speciality for dessert. There’s no licence, but fresh juices & lassi more than make amends.

Absolutely delicious food recommended to me by several British people of Indian extraction. It is a fair hike out in Southall but well worth it. Typical ‘eatery’ style dining – don't come looking for fine dining. But do come if you're looking for top-notch subcontinental food. Can't wait to go back!

Excellent restaurant. We were a aparty of four and had a great time here. IT was very busy and we soaked in the atmosphere. We had a Mix Grill for starters with Peshwari Nann which was amazingly delicious. I have never had meat so tender that it melted in your mouth and really well seasoned and spiced. The Naan was soft and had pistachios and other wonderful things on it, making perfectly unique and mouth watering. We moved on to the main course, Karahi Chicken and Karahi Gosht, Tarka Dhall and Jeera Chicken. This was true pakistani Lahore curries at its best. The meats were all well infused in the curry with a rich aroma. This was the best Dhall i have ever tasted. We moved on to the Deserts, but by now, there was really not much space left in our stomachs, but the Falooda that was being served on to the other tables looked too good to miss. The best Falooda i have ever tasted. The service was grand as well and very attentive. This restaurants looks very modern and is every part a modern equivalent of a Pakistani restaurant. 10 out of 10.

14/9/08 What can i say…went here last week. There were a few people dining. We sat and placed our order. Place appeared to be clean. Ate our starter which was then taken away. Whilst I was sat talking i noticed something walking along the pillar next to me. To my disgust iit was a cockroach. I panicked (never ever seen 1 of these before) We called the waiter who swiped it away with a cloth that he had in his hand. We cancelled the rest of our order but were still made to pay for what we had eaten. Can you imagine this…oh by the way I was told it was a 'baby' cockroach. Even a week later I am still thinking what a 'mama' cockroach looks like.
