Square Meal Review of Galvin Bistrot de Luxe ?

With the clatter of dishes, garrulous laughter and joyous smells of “exceptional French cooking”, this bistro archetype evokes “buzzing cool Paris of the 1950s”, according to one adoring fan. The muscular glamour that gilds the Galvin brothers’ wider empire is evident here in the shape of polished wood panels, miraculously unsullied white napery and close-packed tables. Food-wise, there are plenty of big-boned, triumphantly patriotic classics to be had – both from the wider French canon and from the brothers’ own repertoire. The “amazing” lasagne of Dorset crab with shellfish bisque is a fixture, but also expect elegantly constructed plates of oysters with hot crépinettes or mâche salad with a Burford Brown egg and salt-roasted beetroot ahead of a mighty pig’s trotter with veal sweetbreads or poached pavé of cod with Brittany leeks, saffron and capers. The wine list cruises around Europe, but somehow it feels disloyal to stray too far from France.

Perhaps the oldies like it because this isn’t trendy or quirky and doesn’t have any gimmicks. Or play any music.

It’s a simple brasserie, reasonably priced and with competent service. It’s the very first in the Galvin chain and very different...

Sybaricious :: Galvin Bistrot de Luxe

I was there on an early dining package menu with a group of girlfriends (three courses and a glass of kir royale for £26) and my first pleasant surprise was that this isn't one of those places where those on a "deal" are treated as subordinate to the a la carte customers (I'm glaring at you L'Autre Pied). All the dishes are on their a la carte menu as well so these aren't "specials" using cheaper/ left over ingredients, you are getting the real McCoy.

As soon as you enter there is no question whatsoever as to the nationality of the food on offer. Dark wooden floors and wall panelling punctuated by mirrors...
