Inhabiting an imposing building beneath the Impressions Photography Gallery in Bradford’s regenerated Centenary Square, this locally minded bistro and deli is a hub for young people studying at nearby Forster’s Community College (some from challenging backgrounds). Many of them get the chance to learn kitchen skills under the tutelage of professional chefs, and the results are impressive – from black bream with Puy lentils and sorrel cream to beef or oxtail pie with a carrot, pumpkin and potato topping to lively veggie options such as herb gnocchi with beetroot and parmesan pesto (a riot of colour and taste). Chunky sandwiches are available throughout the day, while floor- to-ceiling windows afford views of the goings-on in the square. A designer with a sense of humour has laid AstroTurf at the front – a playful touch, and not as naff as it sounds.
