Standards have clearly slipped at this once-packed venue. While the kitchen can still send out authentic north-east Thai cooking, tired furnishings & uninterested service mean custom has
dwindled. Mint Vienetta-coloured walls, faded pictures & a humming fish tank, coupled with the faint whiff of wet dog, do little to attract punters, which is a shame as the food still passes
muster. On a deserted Friday night, a homemade Thai sausage packed a punch, while prawn & pork dumpling was soft & sweet, if somewhat soggy. Mains of spiced chicken north-east style &
gaeng ped neau (red beef curry) stole the show with their fresh, zingy flavours. Prices remain low, but curt service undoes much of the kitchen’s good work. Until Esarn Kheaw bucks up, takeaways
seem the best bet.
After our trip to Bangkok, you could say we were missing a bit of Thai food. The real thing, though. Unfortunately, in my own experience in London, the Thai options have tended to be pretty poor: either stuffed away in pubs offering ‘Thai Food’, as a couple of Thais have gotten into the kitchen, or in massively new franchises like Busabi Eathai, which have been springing up like mushrooms recently.A good test of the place is somewhere established and Esarn Kheaw definitely meets this criteria. Thai cuisine is one that I am very fond of and I can never resist a good Thai meal! Unfortunately, Esarn Kheaw was a huge disappointment. Apart from the friendly staff, we really did not enjoy our meal and time at Esarn Kheaw.For the starters, we had the tempura; deep fried mixed vegetables and prawns. The batter was thick and didn’t have much flavour. It was a big portion but not at all tasty and very greasy. The vegetarian spring rolls were tiny and looked like they were overcooked. I’m not sure what they were filled with but it tasted really salty...
