Squaremeal Review of Coq d'Argent ?

With its beautiful roof gardens, "sophisticated ambience", ocean liner decor and encyclopaedic wine list Coq d'Argent distils la vie en rose into one handy, meal-length shot – a perfect little vacation in the City, if you're accustomed to holidaying somewhere grand. There's enough culinary luxe and "immaculate presentation" here to please the assembled silver-haired suits – from a perfect scallop with saffron velouté and subtly smoky brandade to slow-cooked lamb shank rendered mysterious with spices and honey or perhaps pink-roast roe deer with a miniature poached pear and a smear of parsnip purée. To conclude, the Granny Smith parfait is both visual coup de théâtre and flavour bomb, and they serve an excellent tarte fine aux poires too. At lunchtime, the adjoining Grill offers a simpler menu of steaks and brasserie standbys ranging from garlicky snails and crab salad to skate with beurre blanc, cassoulet and wild mushroom tagliatelle. "Brilliant" service moves with a limousine-like purr, though – as we've found – even limousines sometimes misfire.

It’s located in Coq d’Argent, a long standing rooftop restaurant in the City of London. It’s called Coq d’Argent, the Silver Cockerel because the street it’s on, Poultry, takes its name from the produce that used to be sold at market. We headed through the throngs of commuters, took the lift to the top and immediately felt like we had entered a festive haven.
