Occupying what was the much-loved Indian Cavalry Club, China Town has settled in well, following its move from out-of-town premises in Newington – although on-going tram works nearby can cause
problems with access. Fortunately, the regulars who used to frequent the restaurant have migrated with it, which tells you all you need to know about one of Edinburgh’s better Chinese restaurants.
Staff are exceptionally friendly and knowledgeable, while the quality of the dishes lies in their freshness and the kitchen’s all-round competence – rather than any off-piste culinary flourishes.
Typical calls might include Peking-style spare ribs, steamed jumbo prawns in garlic sauce, crispy aromatic duck and stir-fried chicken with cashews and bamboo shoots. It’s also very sensibly
priced: banquets start at £21 per person, and three-course pre-theatre menus are just £14.50.
