Readers regularly rave about this "great little neighbourhood restaurant" and we found it an utterly charming affair, adroitly conducted by owner Patrick Tako. Inside, it mirrors the style of provincial French restaurants, right down to the tiled floors and blue-and-white colour schemes, while the cooking is of a high standard. Our thick slab of melting foie gras terrine came on a sweet, spicy slice of gingerbread with a dollop of port jelly, while expertly cooked, market-fresh fish shines out among the main courses: we loved our big pile of garlicky roe-on scallops, served with new potatoes and spinach. Homemade desserts include a meringue-topped tarte au citron, and there are some wonderfully gutsy numbers on the all-French wine list. Service is lightning-quick and – if you feel like playing along with Tako's "cheeky banter" – it's a "good laugh" too.
