SquareMeal Review of Carluccio's Ealing

Carluccio’s signature blue & white awnings have been brightening up high streets (& boosting house prices) since 1999. These classy-looking caffè/delis are places to use rather than adore, whether for a mid-shopping pit stop or for an impromptu lunch with pals or family. Open all day, they’re a good shout for a pick-me-up espresso or Prosecco (depending how the day’s going). The mid-priced food is ‘reasonably good’ rather than stupendously so, but the chattering classes still pile in for their fix of Puglian olives, wild boar ragù, pasta alla puttanesca & osso bucco milanese. ‘Stick to the simpler stuff’, advises one regular. The produce in the shop is rather more drool-worthy: ‘I would refuse to leave without making a purchase from the deli’, insists one fan. Wise words.

I walk past this every day and its either empty or full of locals wanting to eat Italian. The Delicatessen Counter is very formulaic and has trouble at times projecting a human approach. The Bread is unprotected form sneezes coughs and splutters. A few dishes are on offer each day usually pretty minimal like Tuna fishcakes or Cous Cous Salades Portions are small and pricey. Theres a surfeit of merangues jars and olives. I havent actually sat down to eat in the restaurant but its on open view. All a bit desperate and amateur. Does the job but only just.

Lacklustre Chaotic Joint in a Dreary Part of Town
Firmly sited on the Rat Run between TVU and Ealing Town Centre this small branch of Carluccios offers a pot pourri of the usual Carluccios stock. Rather too many sweeties and olives for my taste. Take Away is very limited. Mainly Salads Basic enough but not inspiring. The Sit Down part I have not tried. Counter Service can be chaotic. I was ignored for some minutes before I placed my order with an over busy waiter behind the counter despite their being no other customers in line. He snatched by snack behind the glass with prongs curtly informing me "thats not yours"before taking it out back. After more delay I was 'served'by a chilly member of staff who didnt respond one word to a number of pleasantaries on my part. I found the atmosphere unpleasant confrontational and hostile. I informed them I might like to write a review. Response was along lines of ‘suit yourself we got plenty’. I hate going in here and was only forced to as the healthy food is one of the few outlets in Ealinsg'food desert. Sad because the Fulham Road branch is much better.
