SquareMeal Review of Calvert's Restaurant

A foodie Mecca for lovers of British regional cheese, the Wensleydale Creamery offers a chance to discover everything you need to know about this crumbly classic – a cheese with Protected Geographical status. Named after Kit Calvert who rescued the creamery from closure in the 1930s, the on-site restaurant is just the place to sample the stuff on its home turf – along with a host of other regional delicacies. Yorkshire rarebit, macaroni cheese and ploughman’s platters fly the flag, but the menu also runs to ham hock terrine, oak-smoked chicken salad, fishcakes and battered haddock – plus jacket potatoes, sundaes and a near-legendary Wensleydale and ginger cheesecake. Sunday lunch is a thumping Yorkshire roast, while kids have their own Wallace & Gromit menu. A trip to the museum is highly recommended, and you must buy some cheese before you leave.
