SquareMeal Review of Bone Daddies Kensington

Bronze Award

"Confidently residing at the delectable end of the fast-food spectrum", this high-energy ramen joint continues to win fans – despite mega decibels and a no-bookings policy. The kitchen knows how to conjure a magic mix of addictive flavours ("bone broth plus plastic bib equals noodle bliss", assures one fan), so grab a table or bag a stool at one of the communal benches for a "delicious bowl of goodness". Sustenance arrives "lightning quick", and there's no shame in slurping your way through the different variations on the soupy ramen theme – perhaps spicy miso with Padrón peppers or ground chicken with lip-tingling spice. The (now legendary) rock ’n’ roll soundtrack may not be to everyone’s taste, but snacks of soft-shell crab in high-octane chilli and ginger sauce or unctuous chashu pork and corn croquettes will keep you distracted. Strong Asian-themed cocktails often make use of tangy yuzu, while the line-up of shochu, whisky and saké takes no prisoners.

About

Bone Daddies rock-and-ramen vibes have been slowly but surely spreading across the capital, with multiple locations now up and running from Putney and Richmond to Bermondsey and Old Street. The High Street Kensington location brings the same raucous fun and rich brothy noodles to this busy corner of West London - the rock aesthetic is back too, with posters on the walls and a pumping soundtrack.

Meanwhile, the extensive menu has all bases covered. As you'd expect, there's plenty of choice for noodle-slurpers and ramen fans - from the more classic tonkotsu (a thick, creamy pork broth with chashu pork belly) to Bone Daddies more innovative and experimental bowls, like the ever-popular lamb tantanmen with teriyaki lamb, spicy sesame and Szechuan chicken scratchings. There are plenty more options in pork or chicken bone broths, and these days, a healthy selection of plant-based ramen bowls too, such as spicy miso ramen and mushroom ramen.

If you're not feeling noodles, fret not - there are lots of other options. The snack menu starts with edamame beans and carries on with braised pig bones, fried chicken, Korean chicken wings, padron peppers and tater tots. Bone Daddies has also gone big on bao buns too, mixing up the fillings between chashu pork, fried chicken, crispy duck, miso aubergine and broken soy eggs with a squirt of mayo.

The drinks menu is equally varied, with a focus on warm and cold sakes as well as beers, ciders and frozen yuzu margaritas if you're feeling fruity. Sakes include the likes of clean and dry junmai sake to a sweet, sparkling, easy drinking sake. Tea drinkers also have a choice between jasmine, green and oolong tea, with unlimited refills into the bargain.
