Square Meal Review of Bocca di Lupo ?

“Love the food, love the place!” exclaims a fan of fun-loving Bocca di Lupo – and no wonder. Its “fabulously hip vibe”, aristocratic looks, marble bar and handsome paintings have a certain cross-generational appeal, while the regional Italian menu’s breadth and depth is virtually unsurpassed in London. Some regulars prefer “culinary entertainment” from the chefs at the counter; others favour the merry, tightly packed dining room. For us, the counter wins: it’s easy to order on sight alone and “fantastically friendly” staff are also well apprised of what’s good: fried sage leaves with anchovy followed by a salad of octopus, roast tomatoes and celery, nettle gnocchi with kid ragù; and gloriously retro cassata siciliana were right on target when we visited. Further off-piste, you might find ‘rosamarina’ (an “unbelievably spicy” Calabrian fermented fish spread) and Roman ‘coratella’ (an offal dish that mixes lamb liver, lungs, heart and kidney). The wine list is exciting, obscure and regionalist – rather like the food.

    Bocca di Lupo, which has been high up on my 'must go' list for quite some time, was booked and I was pleased to note my dining companion was dying to go also...

  1. I went to Bocca di Lupo for a weekday lunch with a dear old friend of mine. From previous failed attempts at booking a table, I made sure I made a reservation well in advance. It’s a popular venue and I can see why. We had an early sitting and already the restaurant was filled. You can either sit in the dining room or follow the more traditional style along the bar. Bocca di Lupo offer Italian dishes from across the regions and you can either order dishes in smaller portions and share tapas style, or order larger portions for individuals. Jacob Kenedy

The son of an artist and a cellist, Cambridge natural science graduate Jacob Kenedy is perhaps not the most likely candidate for the chef’s life, but he certainly seems to have found his calling. Bocca di Lupo, the lively Soho Italian he opened in 2008, is perennially oversubscribed, while his nearby gelateria Gelupo (arguably) serves up some of London’s best ice cream. Bocca di Lupo's sister restaurant Vico opened summer 2015 and serves Italian style street food in an informal setting.
