Square Meal Review of Berners Tavern at Edition Hotel ?

Housed within Ian Schrager’s ultra-cool London Edition hotel (but with its own street entrance), Berners Tavern is a proper “bobby-dazzler” from the moment you process through the palatial glass doors and fabulous lobby. Beyond is “gastronomic heaven” – a sparkling baroque ballroom with sky-high moulded ceilings, epic chandeliers, wall-to-wall gilt-framed paintings, funky music and lots of “well-groomed eye candy”. It’s all thanks to top man Jason Atherton, whose deputy Phil Carmichael oversees a menu that satisfies all day long – from breakfast fry-ups and lunchtime sandwiches to Josper grills and Sunday roasts. In between, there’s a classy sheen to brasserie-style dishes such as aged beef tartare with wild-garlic salsa verde or halibut with “moreish” squid-ink risotto. For afters, we rate the strawberry trifle with basil sorbet, although readers also rave about the warm, “golden” almond brioche in a jar. Energetic staff get (almost) top marks for speed and efficiency, even if “easy-going conviviality” generally wins the day.

    SamTheFoodFan :: Berners Tavern

    It was my friend (and event’s organiser extraordinaire) Caroline's birthday last week and we decided to meet for lunch to celebrate and to view a prospective venue for my office Christmas party. It’s May, I know, but if you want somewhere good you have to start looking early! Anyway, the restaurant of choice was Berners Tavern at The Edition Hotel.

    Berners Tavern is the 5th London restaurant by chef Jason Atherton. For regular readers of my blog, you will know that I have loved every single one of his London restaurants and this one has been on my bucket list from the day it opened in 2013. A lot has been...

  1. Kemey and I dined last night at newly opened Berners Tavern. Hardly a week old, the place buzzed with an energy emitting from the diners who all seemed incredibly stoked just to be there. The latest talk of the town among London’s foodiest of connoisseurs, I couldn’t glance across the tavern’s dining room without spying another food writer, a chef on his night off or some other such industry insider.

    And what a dining room it was to glance across! The space (a former ballroom) was ginormous (we reckoned we could fit ten times our loft conversion one-bedroom flat inside that room). There must have been nearly...

    Drifting Epicure :: Berners Tavern

    By coincidence the birthday dinner of a friend was organized at Berners Tavern the day after my visit at Little Social, both part of Jason Atherton’s growing empire. That’s the only common thing the two restaurants shares though. Berners Tavern offers more of a British fare as opposed to the French of Little Social. The setting is also notably grander. Berners Tavern is located inside The London Edition hotel in the calm neighbourhood of Fitzrovia. The restaurant was all but calm though. It was fully alive already early in the evening when we arrived. We were seated in one of the small tables next to the bar in wait...

    S.W. Foodie :: Berners Tavern...

    Mr Atherton, I want to take my hat off to you. Not only have you had a remarkable couple of years with the opening of Pollen Street Social, Little Social and Social Eating House. I've now found my ultimate Central London restaurant...

    Berners Tavern is quite possibly the most gorgeous, decadent dining room I have ever been in...

  1. 2013 saw Michelin starred chef Jason Atherton open three restaurants, the third of which was Berners Tavern at the Edition Hotel. All three restaurants – the other two were Little Social and Social Eating House – were well received, but it has been Berners Tavern that has made the boldest and most stunning of statements with its fabulously opulent décor. Designed by Ian Schrager who is famous for his makeovers of luxury boutique hotels, Berners Tavern comes with improbably high ceilings, grandiose chandeliers and lavish paintings that run from wall to wall. Berners Tavern is nothing short of palatial, and it simply...

    inher30s :: Berners Tavern

    Berner’s tavern is all about the room. It’s the first impression and really the only impression that counts. High vaulted ceilings and a room absolutely covered with gilt-framed paintings, photographs, mirrors, all twinkling under the light of the chandeliers, this is a place to see and a place to be seen. The effect is glamorous, decadent, lavish and buzzy. I’m positively fizzing with glee.

    And they have round tables so once you’ve stopped looking around with an air of childlike wonder, you’re actually able to talk to each other. So far, pretty good...

Walking into Berners Tavern is like stumbling into Aladdin’s cave and the stunning interior is enough to make you gasp as soon as you slip through the doors. Opulent is an understatement and I had to concentrate on picking my jaw up off the floor where I had dropped it upon entry.We were confronted by a room of majestic proportions with intricately carved soaring ceilings and artwork covering almost every inch of wall in sight; National Gallery eat your heart out.. The Hungry Porker :: Berners Tavern

    Jason Atherton definitely came away from his divorce with Gordon Ramsay with the house and the kids. He hasn’t looked back since that separation, and his restaurants are fast becoming the top go-to places on the London food scene. Berners Tavern is his fourth London restaurant, and it follows more in the vein of the recent Social Eating House, with its hipper and more pocket-friendly menu than that of his flagship Pollen Street Social. Judging by how increasingly trendy his restaurants are getting, he is almost like a slightly less hip version of Mark Hix, except without Tracy Emin and Lily Allen tagging along...

    ytTastes :: Berners Tavern Lunch – The London Edition

    Having tried the breakfast, I was back for the lunch menu. Strictly speaking the menu, other than breakfast, is available all day as Berners Tavern is an all day dining establishment.

    I have to say, I love the decor in the Berners Tavern, it is one of the few places that draws me to look around the dining room instead of giving my dining companions my full attention. As far as I could see, there were a lot of people there for a business lunch/lunch meeting rather than on a purely social dining experience...

    The Food Judge :: A Tale of Two Taverns.

    Apparently, a tavern is somewhere that serves wine and an inn is somewhere that serves beer and ale. According to Wikipedia, in the UK, the word “tavern” is no longer in popular use”. I’m not sure that the owners of the relatively new Newman Street, Berners and Merchants Taverns would agree.

    And other than the fact that it serves wine, I’m not sure that the word “tavern” gives quite the right impression of what Berners Tavern is all about. And for me, it’s all about the room. Pretty jaw-dropping, somewhat spectacular, this is a glamorous, exciting and dramatic dining space. An hotel dining room, yes, but...

    ytTastes :: Berners Tavern Breakfast – The London Edition

    Several opportunities to experience the Berners Tavern at The London Edition.

    Situated off Oxford Street on Berners Street just down the road from The Sanderson Hotel, Berners Tavern offers all day dining and by the looks of it, is at the time of this post, quite THE place to entertain. The place from what I could see, seemed constantly buzzing with people – business entertaining, social gathering, and just to be seen.

    Berners Tavern is under the direction of Jason Atherton, and following the trend of late, offers extensive British Cuisine...

  1. This is the 10th restaurant under the Jason Atherton group which follows the recent 2013 launches of ‘Social Eating House’ in Soho and ‘Little Social’, opposite his flagship Michelin Starred ‘Pollen Street Social’. The kitchen at Berners Tavern is headed by Phil Carmichael who has worked for Jason for over a decade at both ‘Pollen Street Social’ and ‘Little Social’.

    Agent Restauranteur :: Berners Tavern – London W1T

    This grand restaurant bathed in candle light delivers a memorable evening of glamorous dining.

    Jason Atherton’s newest restaurant is a haven from the hustle and bustle of London’s heaving West End. Stepping through the doors of The Edition Hotel is like entering a different world, a world of decadent, stylish glamour. The restaurant itself is stunning – the enormous dining room’s filled with ornate decor; enormous chandeliers hang from the ceiling, framed pictures adorn every inch of the walls, whilst burning candles add an intimate air of romance and atmosphere into an otherwise gargantuan space. Berners...

  1. My mum was in London again, and we both really wanted to try the much-talked about Berners Tavern at The London EDITION Hotel. It is incredibly popular at the moment, and though difficult to get a booking, we managed to squeeze in the end of lunch service.

    Located in Fitzrovia, The London EDITION is a collaboration between Ian Schrager and the Marriott chain of hotels. The partnership of the two was intended to combine the intimate and unique design skills of Schrager with the scale of the Marriott. When we entered the gorgeous lobby of the hotel it certainly didn't feel like a generic Marriott. Marble flooring,...

    Gingle lists everything :: Berners Tavern, 8th November

    Stephen and I were both already convinced that Berners Tavern was going to be gorgeous both aesthetically and gastronomically, so the fact that it was, was no surprise. I think Jason Atherton must be having a laught calling it a Tavern. I've rarely dined in grander surroundings whereas a tavern to me is somewhere peasants go to drink. This place is huge, with walls completely covered with framed portraits. They fit together in such a perfect jigsaw that the arrangement must have taken ages to design. You feel like you are dining in the middle of a fine arts gallery. The other decor is no less sumptuous with giant...

    Nomface :: Berners Tavern, London

    Berners Tavern is one of Jason Athertons latest ventures. Set in the London Edition hotel on Berners Street off Oxford Street it boasts one of the most eye catching dining rooms that I have ever dined in.

    During my breakfast visit I settled for Eggs Royale and a clean looking plate was presented. The portion was rather large to my surprise. The egg yolk was runny and oozed out when I cut through the egg. A classic dish with hollandaise and smoked salmon which was executed very well...

  1. Another venture into one of Jason Atherton's restaurants definitely got me excited given the amazing experience I had at the Social Eating House. Once again, MRG was joining me so we were both in for another visit to flavour-town!I entered the restaurant and I honestly felt this was one of the best dining spaces I have ever eaten in; the collage of portraits, the high ceiling and the tall brightly-lit bar. It was absolutely stunning and it made me even more anxious to try the food.I started off by ordering the Egg, Ham and Peas (£12.50) which I believe is supposed to be the iconic starter here. I was a bit skeptical...

    Berners Tavern is Jason Atherton’s latest restaurant (he also owns Michelin starred Pollen Street Social, Little Social and Social Eating House) and it is situated inside the rather stylish London Edition Hotel. 1. Hotel food with a twist

    Hotel restaurants are very different from restaurants in hotels. This may seem like a minor semantic difference, but there’s actually a yawning gulf between the two. Hotel restaurants are identikit eateries serving up a large menu of lowest common denominator dishes designed for weary travellers too tired to care and unadventurous tourists who don’t know any better. Restaurants in hotels, on the other hand, are designed as destinations in their own right with menus and interiors designed to appeal to hotel guests and non-guests alike.

    Berners Tavern is definitely a restaurant...

    Wrap Your Lips Around This :: Berners Tavern

    Berners Tavern is Jason Atherton’s third restaurant in London, and although all of his others have a zest to please the palate, Berners Tavern bumbles along on the wayside. It is set in a glorious dining hall in The London Edition Hotel, where sun-like chandeliers illuminate the filigree and grandeur of its every inch. Walls are hung with a delightful mass of paintings and prints, each in their own curling frames...

  1. Since leaving Gordon Ramsey in 2010, Jason Atherton has taken the restaurant world by storm, soaring his way through Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai, London and [soon to be] Dubai. It's been a while since I've been to Asia (when I was there, you probably would've been more likely to find me shoving my face into a bowl of street food instead of engaging in fine dining etiquette), but I have not missed the chance to sample his wares in London. Since the triumphant Pollen Street Social, we've seen the likes of Little Social, Social Eating House and City Social spanning across Mayfair, Soho, Fitzrovia, and into The City...

  1. Masquerading behind its lowly title is a restaurant as much a pub as Pollen Street Social is a working men’s club.
    From its street entrance the glass vestibule provided a necessary moment to take it all in. Its towering gold walls were adorned with interlocking paintings and photographs of various sizes, a carefully considered jumble of subjects and styles patchworked to stunning effect. The five-metre high bar was backlit orange like a huge lump of liquor-preserving amber that needed carabiners and a harness to negotiate. Stuccoed ceilings, ornate and reminiscent, loomed over modern insertions: the automatic...
