Square Meal Review of Asia de Cuba at St Martins Lane Hotel ?

It's all change at Asia de Cuba, following its planned closure in early 2015. Philippe Starck's high concept interior with its monolithic columns has received a colourful hipster makeover with mismatched retro furniture and dramatic drapes, creating a warmer, more approachable space. The menu's more approachable too, thanks to an overhaul by Cuban-born executive chef Luis Pous. Regulars will spot a few familiar favourites - such as the crispy calamari salad and Mexican doughnuts - but portions are smaller, prices lower and there's a wider variety of Chino-Latino fusion dishes on offer to please adventurous foodies. Take tips from the clued-up staff in sneakers and gingham shirts We kicked off with zingy shrimp ceviche, spiced up with aji amarillo chilli and wasabi, then found our mojo with a wok dish of mojo duck confit: sticky savoury rice and rich duck slices with a fresh pep of Thai basil, topped with an oozing poached egg. Not all dishes left us smiling – signature black cod now comes with a punchy escabeche that overpowers the silky flakes of fish – but picture-perfect guava cheesecake layered between coconut tuiles was hands down the best dessert we've ever had at AdC. Reliably good cocktails and classy wines complete the picture.

vialaporte :: Asia de Cuba // Covent Garden // London

Despite not being the newest hotel on the block, St. Martin’s Lane has managed to remain at the forefront of designed hotels in London and still attracts a trendy crowd. Enhanced at night with its different coloured lights, the high white ceiling in the lobby is very Saatchi gallery-esque. The Light Bar behind reception...

inher30s :: Asia de Cuba Afternoon Tea

It may surprise you to read that Asia de Cuba does afternoon tea – and in case you’re picturing another sandwich/scone afternoon, look again. Asia de Cuba offers a savoury/sweet combo menu that ticks all the boxes.

The restaurant is located in a hotel lobby, but without a sign. I’m not sure how I feel about lobby restaurants, especially ones where you can’t tell if you’re in the right place but I’ll let that go for now. I’ve heard much about the interior, decorated by French designer Philippe Starck, the detail is achingly hip – book-lined pillars, transistor radios on display and brightly coloured prints...

  1. Yesterday Lorna and I indulged in an afternoon tea with a difference at St Martins Lane hotel, London. We were there to try the Cafecito afternoon tea at Asia de Cuba, a sweet and savoury feast with both Asian and Cuban influences.

In the modern surroundings of Asia de Cuba, with Cuban music playing in the background, our tea was served on wonderfully quirky bespoke china.

As you arrive each diner is presented with a cigar box full of the utensils required for your tea, and you are told that you will need to make just four choices during your whole experience....and all of these are drink related!

TRUsocial :: TRUsocial: Starck Fusion at Asia de Cuba

So, I guess you could say that this was my first proper venture into quality fusion food a few years back and as such, it has stuck with me, leaving me in a state of wanton craving on more than one occasion. I should get it out there sooner rather than later though, as much for your benefit as for mine you see (in an attempt to curb the useless ranting), the Miso Cured Black Cod has penetrated my subconscious and has positively turned me into a dribbling fool! Thank you Asia de Cuba for tantalising my taste buds and allowing me to leer over your treasure chest of a rum bar...

I promise not to rant as forewarned,...
