Square Meal Review of Aqua Kyoto ?

As far removed from the Zen minimalist school as it gets, Aqua Kyoto does high-end Japanese with a bit of razzmatazz. Feel the vibe as you circumnavigate the central bar, past gorgeous kimono silk-padded booths, to reach the dramatic dining room with its showpiece sunken sushi bar crowned by an oversize red lantern. The clubby mood conjures up shades of Tokyo’s swanky Ginza district, likewise the menu’s luxurious bent. Go for broke by ordering king crab tempura with crab miso, Wagyu maki rolls and agedashi aubergine with roasted foie gras, or discover original creations ranging from chilli yuzu lamb teriyaki with Japanese artichokes to rabbit with green peach, pumpkin tofu and mustard ankake sauce. By contrast, lunchtime bento boxes and sashimi selections are gentler on the wallet. The terrace is perfect for a sundowner.

    sexdrugsandbaconrolls :: Aqua Kyoto

    Aqua Kyoto is an Asian fusion restaurant with sister restaurants in Hong Kong and in Dubai. In the next few months a new one will open at the Shard – watch this space. The restaurant is made up of tables surrounding the large chef’s station, which is where Japanese chefs prepare fresh sushi with extreme skill. This perfect square of a station is strikingly large and is surrounded by tables. We were actually seated on the chefs station so had a perfect view of the sushi making in action...

    Samphire and Salsify :: Aqua Kyoto

    What with the hugely successful openings of Aqua Shard and Hutong in the Shard building it’s easy to forget that Aqua also have two existing restaurants on the fifth floor of the former Dickins and Jones department store opposite the Palladium theatre.

    There’s Aqua Nueva, a contemporary Spanish restaurant and Aqua Kyoto, which offers Japanese fare. The latter has recently acquired a new head chef and I was kindly invited along to try some of the new dishes on offer...

    The Swindian :: Aqua Kyoto

    The 5th floor on Regent Street? Sounds incredibly fancy. In reality, the view isn’t great, as all the buildings around are the same height, and it was obviously too cold to sit outside. Having said that, the inside was absolutely beautiful. I loved how we could observe the sushi chefs at work, and the grill was very impressive (although not as much as the very effective extractor fan above it!).

    Now the food. Wow. All 4 of us actually ordered the same thing ( the choice was very limited, with 2 choices for course 1, and 3 choices for course 2). The presentation, however, was impeccable. The sushi tasted so...

  1. After all the eating and boozing over Christmas, many of us try to start the new year with a healthier approach. Often the word healthy can be translated as dull when we envisage such dishes in our head. However, Soho restaurant Aqua Kyoto has managed to create a menu which combines food which is both nutritious and tastes gorgeous. The New Year Solutions is a special menu which runs from January to March 2015, offering three courses of delicious and nourishing Japanese fare...

  1. Aqua Kyoto does high-end Japanese in the swankiest way possible. The entrance to the restaurant is through a ground floor lobby, decked out in deep crimson where a doorman awaits to direct diners to a lift that takes you up to the lavishly finished fifth floor.

    The first half of Aqua Kyoto is composed of the bar area, Aqua Spirit, which is surrounded by kimono silk padded booths. This leads onto a dramatic dining room where the main show piece is a sunken sushi bar where diners can watch their meals being expertly made...
