Way out west in Partick, kookily named Velvet Elvis is an appealingly oddball hangout in a converted Edwardian butcher’s shop – complete with original white-tiled walls, bare brickwork, a working
jukebox and menus printed on record-sleeve inserts (with the vinyl in situ). The kitchen cares about sourcing and offers a mixed bag of small and large plates ranging from crab and avocado
bruschetta or pressed pork belly with caramelised apple to rack of herb-crusted Perthshire lamb, sizzling fajitas and chicken with sweet potato mash and pink peppercorn sauce – plus grills and the
King’s favourite burgers. At weekends, brunching locals call in for plates of the ‘full Scottish’, eggs Benedict or French toast with maple syrup and bacon, while regular quizzes and open-mic
nights broaden the venue’s all-round appeal. The owners also run the Criterion Grand Café & Saloon next door.
