Square Meal Review of Union Street Café ?

David Beckham pulled out at the last minute, but that hasn’t stopped a rush for tables at Gordon Ramsay’s new venture – proof that Ramsay himself retains considerable pulling power. With its casual urban setting and emphasis on Italian cooking, this venue marks a welcome departure for the globetrotting chef, who has drafted in Davide Degiovanni to head up the kitchen. Expect rather ‘small’ portions of accomplished, ingredient-led dishes ranging from intensely flavoured tagliolini with rabbit and provolone, or lamb cutlets with baked fennel and onion to Amaretto and chocolate budino – a deliriously rich, custardy dolce. Switched-on young staff in casual garb are a good fit for the restaurant’s warehouse-chic theme, and there are cocktails aplenty to be had in the basement bar. ‘I absolutely loved the whole package’, declares one fan.

    Samphire and Salsify :: Union Street Cafe

    Based just a short stroll from Southwark tube, the restaurant is a rather beautiful one. It’s got that ever familiar look of exposed pipes and warehouse chic but it doesn’t feel drafty or uncomfortable. The bar down in the basement is also a looker and definitely worth a visit on its own...

  1. The menu at Gordon Ramsay’s Union Street Café changes seasonally (although a month after visiting, the same ‘sample menu’ was still on the website), so it’s difficult to know if this is a common experience for people who have dined there, but we were given a menu which was practically written in Italian. Not just a few words here or there. Actual full-on Italian. Having some ‘nduja, polpo and grappa feature on your menu for the sake of the ambience (or looking a little pretentious) is perfectly harmless, but when your guests have to ask the waiters to translate the menu – which is what happened to me and 4 friends...

    theeventsgirl :: Ramsay’s Union Street Cafe…

    Just south of the Thames, in a place known mainly for its weekend market (Borough), Gordon Ramsay is a week short of opening his latest restaurant venture….

    Whilst any new Ramsay opening usually sparks quite the interest, the opening of Union Street Cafe has sent the restaurant loving London into a frenzy. According to some online media, on opening the booking line for Union Street, there was an incredible 2500 bookings taken in just 4 hours! I am pleased to say that 2 of those bookings were mine...

    Dancing In High Heels :: UNION STREET CAFE

    So here's one of my latest impulsive reservation bookings - eager to check out for myself what all the buzz and excitement was about. Gordon Ramsey's 10th opening in Britain - looks like I've still got a few to catch up on.

    We arrived at the restaurant a bit earlier than expected after wandering about for a bit. The streets of London are always so quiet on a Sunday, and Mr D finally gave in to my persistent hungry cries.

    A hungry (wo)man is an angry (wo)man.

    We were seated in the middle of...

    vialaporte :: Union Street Café // Southwark // London

    The latest restaurant in the Gordon Ramsay Empire has been subject to huge media attention. The opening saw punters flirting with the thought of David Beckham lingering about, which ensured that the first few months of booked were confirmed within a nano-second. While dreams of Mr. Beckham failed to materialise, it’s clear that some serious money has been spent on kitting this place out. However, the industrial cavernous dining room doesn’t really create the buzzy atmosphere that it was perhaps intended to, though the downstairs cocktail bar is a wonderfully intimate space.

    So has the same amount of attention...
