Square Meal Review of The Table ?

Originally the staff canteen for locally based architects Allies & Morrison, The Table continues to evolve and now serves up breakfast, lunches and evening meals (including live jazz on Saturdays), plus a weekend brunch offer that is tempting enough to lure foodies away from nearby Borough Market. The kitchen is run by one of Angela Hartnett’s protégés, so you can expect accomplished modern Italian dishes based on the judicious use of seasonal ingredients. Typical offerings from the eco-friendly line-up might include grilled sardines with gremolata, slow-roast pork belly with Castelluccio lentils and salsa verde or braised beef stew with soft polenta, followed by puds such as pannacotta with poached rhubarb and cantucci. The innovative wine list is a bonus with its line-up of unusual bottles (all available by the glass), and there are some good British beers, too.

    FoodiesOnTheProwl FoodiesOnTheProwl :: The Table, Aug 2013

    We’d been to the Table before when a different chef was at the helm. This time we decided to visit them on a Friday night instead of weekend lunch and we were surprised at the vibrant scene we encountered. When we arrived a resident DJ was playing mellow house music and the place was packed. We decided to sit at a table outside and enjoy the nice summer evening...

  1. We had the chance to visit Dabbous. We turned it down. Are we mad? Possibly, yes, but it was for a very good cause. The Table restaurant on Southwark Street, where our blog began, was having a press night to showcase their new head chef, Cinzia Ghighoni, and we wanted to lend our support.

    Cinzia, previously of Duck Soup and nearby Zucca has taken over the Head Chef reigns from Shaun Alpine-Crabtree, and slotted in perfectly, giving a new lease of life to the menu (not that we think it needed it of course)...

  1. I’ve been meaning to give the Table Cafe a try for quite a while now. However, the final push came after I learned that one of the former chef’s of Zucca recently moved there to head-up the kitchen…so the Foodies decided to go prowling in their Southward backyard...

  1. It has been approximately five years that I have been waiting to have brunch at The Table Cafe. Really.

    This inconspicuous restaurant across the road from work has become special to me. Lunch and dinner has always been incredible (click here for our review), but the thought of coming up to London and doing my work commute on a Saturday was just all wrong...

    love2feed :: eat: the table

    She says: Although having worked in the Southwark area for six months when I first arrived in London, I only managed to squeeze in the occasional morning coffee run at The Table. One recent weekend, we were tossing up between The Table, Elliot’s cafe and Bea’s diner @ Maltby St markets for Saturday brunch. Thanks to fellow foodie Dione, we were swayed by her recommendation to try the food at this cafe! I’ve heard the Table is packed to the brim on weekends and queues here can be quite long and disheartening. We walked briskly and quickened our pace to get there before 11am. Despite being surrounded by a crowd of young urbanites and groups of families – from babies in strollers to grey haired grans, there’s a relaxed ambience in the air. We are greeted with pleasant smiles, then seated on a long wooden bench next to another unassuming couple...
