Some readers feel this handsome restaurant, spread across various rooms of a former coaching inn, is let down by small portions & long waits between courses. However the arrival of a new maître
d’ & head chef have heralded improvements, so with luck the gripes will end, as The Spread Eagle is hard to beat for history & romance. Its walls are covered in illustrations depicting
local scenes, & in winter a blazing fire lights up the snug bar. The short French menu might include foie-gras & ham-hock terrine, or chicken in pear & truffle sauce. Weekends are more
relaxed, with a £15.95 three-course brunch including dishes such as eggs Benedict & burgers. Let’s hope 2012 sees a return to form for this Greenwich institution.
