Set by the green in a perfectly turned-out Pennine village, this 18th-century coaching inn is a tried & trusted country retreat. Bag a Windsor chair & cosy up to the log fire in the bar for
Welsh rarebit, sausage & mash or steak & kidney pie followed by sticky toffee pudding or hot ginger flapjack cake. In the evening, four-course dinners (£30) are served in a panelled dining
room that positively glows with candlelight & polished silver. The cooking’s pretty polished, too: twice-baked goats’ cheese souffle followed by sea bream fillets & fennel in a tomato broth
set a highly satisfying standard that held up at every turn. There are tables outside in summer & if the wine list proves too tempting, you can always book one of the inn’s comfortable bedrooms
for a sleepover.
