Most Brits’ knowledge of Greek food is limited to their holiday gyros & moussaka, washed down with copious quantities of Mythos beer. The Real Greek chain has its work cut out convincing the
populace there’s more to it, but its lively contemporary eateries do a game job with an enticing menu that champions the region’s wonderful ingredients – octopus, herbs, honey, olives, pulses &
suchlike. ‘Nibbles & mezze’ cover a lot of ground from dolmades & grilled haloumi to smoked aubergine salad or garlic & chilli tiger prawns, though mains are pretty much limited to
souvlaki with flatbread. Meagre portion sizes are a serious grumble, so you’ll probably have ample space for pudding. Think carefully before ordering the ‘Greek sundae’, however; there are calorie
counts with every dish, & that bad boy has 685.
We have been to The Real Greek for dinner once before and were disappointed with the service, food quality and portions but we were invited for lunch at their Spitalfields branch and could not decline.We went to this ubiquitous restaurant in Spitalfields Market, underneath an arch in the centre of the market place. The small restaurant was pretty quiet so there were still some booths available. The booths were on high seats so it was rather humorous...
