SquareMeal Review of The Prince Regent

Follow a stroll in Brockwell Park with a well-kept pint or bite to eat at this gentrified boozer. Friendly staff, scrubbed pine tables & board games engender a home-from-home feel. A short menu of pub classics (soup, sausage & mash, burger & chips) is supplemented by more ambitious specials such as stuffed rabbit with celeriac gratin, or grilled rump of lamb with tapenade jus. Standards are mostly high, but prices rise with the chef’s aspirations. On Monday evenings, however, two courses cost just £11. The bar has Black Sheep, three guest ales & cider on draught, plus myriad foreign bottled beers. This being nappy-valley territory, parents & tots descend for brunch during the daytime. The pavement terrace (pleasant, despite the Dulwich Road traffic) provides some respite in summer.

The Prince is a pricely fellow, and even if you are a republican he will not offer you better value for money than the current Monarchy. At £8 for a potted shrimp starter smaller than an amulet, and £6.50 for a terrine the size of Prince Charle's left ear, regal dinning is clearly not for the thrifty. The terrine had all the majesty of a tin of spam, albeit spam royal. The potted shrimp was a dismal affair as well, seemingly frozen and clumped together at its base. Mains faired better- Steaks a hard thing to get terribly wrong, but also a difficult skill to master… this certainly was not an exhibition of mastery. At £18 though, it was a princley sum forked out for a ruin of the mill affair. Desert had all the finise of a Micheal Bay movie, minus the fire works. Cement like pastry, thicker than the chair legs of my seat, caked what once had the misfortune of being an apple. I mean apple pie… how do you get that sooo wrong? And have the audacity to charge for it? Well its because for all its drawbacks, the Prince does have charisma… his people are enthusiastic and well mannered, the atmosphere is light hearted and it does put a smile on your face. My advice is bar snacks and drinks are the way to go, and if you are looking for a decent meal look amongst Brixton's other gems.
