The peacock in question is Linda Peacock, the perky brains behind this enterprising coffee shop on busy Gillygate. ‘Great food made with produce from some of York’s best artisan producers’ is the
promise, and the menu delivers – from simple breakfast/brunch dishes (croque monsieur, poached egg on toasted pesto bread, bacon butties etc) to hand-made sandwiches, salads and various mixed
platters (the ‘European hitchhiker’s version’ features a mixed bag of French, Spanish and Italian deli goodies including lemon chicken, Gruyère, prosciutto crudo, chorizo, olives and chutney).
Liquid refreshment comes from top-notch coffee, teas and soft drinks, juices and so on. A second branch of The Perky Peacock is housed in an ancient medieval tower underneath Lendal Bridge.
