The Modern Pantry is ‘a very memorable place’ – and usually for all the right reasons. First, there is the setting – a gorgeous Georgian house containing a cluster of different eating spaces, with
the action spilling out onto St John’s Square on fine days. Then there is the food. Forget those late-90s’ fusion nightmares – Kiwi chef Anna Hansen’s highly expressive style delivers ‘delicate
dancing flavours’. Few of her peers could pull off chorizo, date and feta fritters with tamarind yoghurt, or beetroot, fennel and leek gratin with a deep-fried egg and tahini dressing with such
élan. If in doubt, dip a toe into the melting pot over a breakfast of sweetcorn, feta and chilli waffles in the all-day café. The joyfully globetrotting wine list is strong on organic bottles,
although service can be wobbly.
There’s something eminently friendly about this five-page wine list that divides its wines by broad style and supports them with helpful tasting notes. With 25 wines by the glass (most of them in three serve sizes) and a good selection of sub-£40 wines plus the odd splurge wine for wealthy entrepreneurs, this eatery really matches wine to customer.

I do love The Modern Pantry. I don't know quite why everything tastes good and why the very surprising flavour combinations work. What I do know is that my plate always ends up empty.Reading the ever-changing menu can be a tad perplexing. You seriously have to think about all of these, often unusual, ingredients together, and it's usually that it isn't until the dish arrives and you are tasting it that you "get" it...

Cold, snowy & sleety… must be mad to go out to brunch with the girls and make it down to the Modern Pantry which is not in my neighbourhood. However a very quick & efficient over ground train to Farringdon gave me my usual first to arrive at the designated meeting place.I was a little apprehensive as I was considerably early and knowing that it had been difficult to book a table at the right time I was pleasantly surprised to be greeted by the staff, very welcoming (perhaps helped that I looked frozen despite being totally wrapped up), and I was escorted to a very nice table on the first floor, promptly asked if I wanted anything to drink, and my caffe latte was immediately placed on order before I could disrobe myself of my rather excessive wintry attire...

We have been to The Modern Pantry for dinner before but decided to try it as a brunch location. It was a lovely sunny day and all of the tables on the terrace outside were taken; this was fine as there was a light breeze and there is nothing worse than luke warm food due to wind chill. We walked up the couple of stairs to the reception and gave our booking reference , the waitress looked for a good couple of minutes and then gave up and showed us a free table – clearly they hadn’t put us on the system even though we had called the day before. Fortunately the restaurant indoors was pretty quite so she could give us a table without losing face. It’s a little awkward as the reception desk is right by the door (which was open as it was sunny) and the waiters kept having to push past us as they were serving outside...

The Modern Pantry is a rather nice Clerkenwell restaurant where everything is white or a darker shade thereof. It is run by Anna Hansen, who is famous in cheffy type circles for being one of the names behind The Providores. The other was Peter Gordon who is now running Kopapa which is very much overrated and not all that delicious. The Modern Pantry is a lot more delicious. Take note Mr Gordon...

This was one of those lazy Sundays when the first thing you do of the day is to head for late brunch in the afternoon. There is no better way to start a Sunday than with a hearty meal of good food and catching up with friends. We came to Modern Pantry, a comfortably relaxed restaurant located in the area of furniture shops, Clerkenwell. It has two floors and outdoor seating when weather allows. The first floor where we sat is the more informal space with bare white wooden tables.Modern Pantry is known for the brunch but I ended up ordering the three course set lunch instead since I was quite hungry...
