SquareMeal Review of The Jam Cupboard at Rydges Hotel

Housed within the refurbished Rydges Hotel not far from Gloucester Road tube station, the stylish Jam Cupboard mixes the big-city vibes of a New York-style central bar with a dining room majoring on perky Anglo-European cuisine with a few eclectic overtones. The drinks offer brings international wines alongside classic martinis, mojitos and brambles, while the seasonal menu might kick off with asparagus and hazelnut risotto or beetroot-cured gravadlax with mustard dressing and pickled cucumber. To follow, consider slow-braised Irish ox cheeks with glazed Chantenay carrots and horseradish pomme purée, a char-grilled burger or cod fillet with Provençal vegetables and basil oil, before rounding off with classic lemon tart or roasted peaches with lemon and thyme. Breakfast is worth knowing about and set menus are deemed ‘excellent value’ – especially if you’re en route to the Royal Albert Hall.

Enjoyable food - Good value for money with offer!
I would recommend The Jam Cupboard for great food and good service.. With the Square Meal offer I found it good value for money and would definitely return again. As myself and my friend were going to the Proms at the Albert Hall it was a comfortable 10 minute walk. Lovely modern decor and relaxing ambience.

Good unhurried quality dining
Not more than a few strides from the Millennium Gloucester Hotel, this well appointed restaurant serves the function of escape to stylish venue pretty well. The special offer made the evening surprisingly modest in cost - two courses and a bottle of wine with service for less than £60 in central London. Attentive service. A wider choice of desserts wouldn't go wrong, but I'll be back. Who needs pudding anyway?

A mixed experience
3 of us went for a free concert dinner. The food was generally pretty good. Starter of fish cakes was well cooked although the tartare sauce was a little bland. The lamb steak was large, properly seasoned and cooked and nicely presented. Drinks were a bit hit or miss. I ordered an alcohol free cocktail however the waiter wasn't familiar with their cocktail list and instead gave me the alcoholic version. Likewise ordering a small glass of wine resulted in a large one being delivered - staff didn't seem very well trained, but we're keen to please. The atmosphere was a bit disappointing, but imagine later in the evening and the week would be quite lovely. Value for money was good with the square meal offer of 50% off the food, but would not be quite so attractive if you were paying full price.

Limited Choice - No atmosphere - Not Good Value for Money
We ate here lunchtime on 22nd December 2015. We were the only two diners in the restaurant so there was no atmosphere. There is a very limited lunchtime menu from which to choose. My partner had a burger which she said was only 'average', I had fried fish which was no better than what one can get served from a local chip shop. Although the food felt freshly prepared I would rank it only slightly above what you can purchase from any decent pub. The difference being of course is that The Jam Cupboard is much more expensive. The service was okay but then it should be if you are the only two diners in the place, although the waitress was extremely pleasant. We wouldn't return again as there are plenty of restaurants in the area offering much better value.

Party of 6 ate from the a la carte menu on a Saturday evening. I had fish cakes for starters were very good (hot and full of flavour), followed by duck salad. Others had chicken, salmon and gnocchi from the menu and all agreed that the quality and presentation of the food exceeded expectations. Service was good, but a little slow, mainly due to only 2 waiting staff being on duty, and the restaurant being fairly busy. They worked hard though! I would return here. At full price the menu is over-priced, however with 50% off food from the a la carte menu with Square meal, it was very good value for money.

The Jam Cupboard was quiet during our visit, that's not to say empty, but still had a very nice atmosphere. The waitress was lovely and very polite and the service was very good. We were a party of five and all the meals were very well presented and, most importantly, very good to eat. It's not particularly cheap, but then where is in this area? And with the offers and deals you can find it can bring the prices down considerably. Within a short walk from the Royal Albert Hall I thought it was perfect for a pre or post show meal.

Excellent value for money
I wanted to precook a restaurant for four as we were going to royal Albert hall. This restaurant was an ideal location but I was a little reluctant to book because it seemed too cheap for the location. We were certainly not disappointed and would recommend this restaurant . We had the 3course, set menu which was excellent value for money and we would not hesitate to rebook in the future
