SquareMeal Review of The Gun

Bronze Award

“If the sun comes out on the terrace, there’s nowhere better”, declares a fan of The Gun and its striking riverside position. Pints have been poured at this Docklands site for 250 years (famous drinkers include both Lord Nelson and Tinie Tempah), but the boozer passed into London food history as one of Ed and Tom Martin’s first gastropubs. Now owned by Fuller’s brewery, it’s still an “amazing location” full of possibilities for lazy Sundays – try the whole roast Suffolk chicken for two. Otherwise, bangers and mash are a speciality in the bar, alongside beer-friendly snacks including devilled whitebait. The restaurant set-up is smarter, with posh dishes such as seared scallops with brown onion consommé, charred button onions, grilled leeks and white onion purée followed by roast Yorkshire pheasant with sour pear jus or cod fillet with braised fennel fondue. Beers reflect the pub’s ownership, and there’s a full roster of food-friendly wines.

The Gun is a good place to grab pre gig dinner if you are going to the O2 Arena. This is exactly what we did this weekend. The pub itself is a really nicely laid out venue. The Gin Garden has stunning views of the Thames and the O2 Arena across the river. The atmosphere in the pub is nice and calm. The food was actually deliciously cooked and beautifully presented. Mains of Duck Breast in a citrus glaze with polenta and Seabass with muscles and homemade ravioli were delicious as were the sides of chips, spinach and carrots. Had to take off half a star away as the dessert was very poor and took away from the dining experience. We ordered a the chocolate fudge cake and coffee ice cream. It looked the part when it turned up however with some hidden issues. Cutting through the dense sweet and cloying folds of chocolate covering it revealed a very dry and tasteless sponge which should have been moist. Secondly the fudge / caramel sauce was in a small saucepan which gave the impression it would be served hot. With the coldness of the icecream, you would have thought the fudge sauce would be warm as a contrast to the other elements of the desert. Not so, it was served cold. I can only surmise the kitchen messed up the sponge and added the dense layer of chocolate onto it to disguise this fact. Shame as the overall experience was good and I'm hoping the issue with the desert was a one off.

Had a great time!
Came for lunch for with 2 of my friends, even though it was Sunday and they were fairly busy the staff were very accommodating and managed to get us a nice table in the dining room. Was a great place to enjoy a Sunday afternoon lunch, we'll definitely be coming again!!

Great location, service a bit lacking
Well worth a visit for the stunning and out of the way location (provided you can sit outside). The service was very friendly but rather inefficient. They didn't seem to know when we wanted to order – good restaurants seem to be able to spot this. Also I had booked the set menu online but was only offered the standard menu and had to ask for the set menu list – I hate that. The same thing happened again when ordering dessert. Set menu was fine for only £18. I put in an overall rating of 3 stars but the review is showing 4 stars – doesn't deserve that.

Used to be so much better
So disappointed with the Gun on Saturday. When we have gone for lunch before on a nice day we have been sat outside but for some reason everyone was inside. Such a shame on a nice day and think that maybe what we thought was great about the Gun is actually the view as was very dissapointed with food. The steak was so fatty and tough and service was very lacking. Don't think will be eating there again. Such a shame, my Dad loved it (because of the view) and we went on Saturday to celebrate his memory on his birthday. We will be going somewhere different next year.

Excellent pub
Great place – good beers, food and views of the Thames. Book a table on their deck and try a fish special for lunch. Perfect!

Pub with a view
The gun is a gastropub a short walk from canary wharf with great views of the thames and the O2. The food was good though maybe slightly overpriced for what it was.
