SquareMeal Review of The Durham Ox

Yorkshire villages don’t get much cuter than hilltop Crayke, & pub food doesn’t get much more satisfying than the big-hearted dishes served at the Ox. Settle in among the wood panelling, log fires, flickering candles & oak tables for a retro dish of queen scallops with garlic & parsley butter topped with Gruyère or a plate of big-flavoured venison & root vegetable casserole. There’s chateaubriand for two, as well as burgers & a host of daily fish specials, plus sticky ginger pudding with toffee sauce & vanilla ice cream to finish. Private dining & smart guest rooms are part of the package, but the Ox is still a village pub at heart; there are no bookings at the bar, where all you need is a pint of prime Yorkshire bitter to feel right at home.

We were the first Friday lunchtime diners in (about 1220).  We were left standing in the restaurant for a couple of minutes before any staff noticed us.  The barman (who was friendly) got my drinks order wrong.  The waitress (who was not friendly) dumped our bread down almost without looking at us en route somewhere else.  The bread was the same as white supermarket baguettes you can heat up at home.  My Tempura prawns were neither tasty nor had the light batter you expect from Tempura - rather thick, dark brown batter.  Suspect they were just bought in frozen and heated up.  My wife's halibut (£26) was ruined by oversalting.  My calves liver was OK but mangetout in February?  Good restaurants serve seasonal vegetables - what about some nice kale?  Didn't stay to be further disappointed by dessert.
