London’s bohemian literary set may no longer convene in Bloomsbury, but the Montague captures something of that spirit with its rich decor and grand rooms. Given its location close to the British
Museum, the hotel naturally brings out the Lucy Honeychurch in its guests – encouraging elevated conversation alongside the enjoyment of their fine teas. The standard afternoon repast (£27.50)
changes often – so expect coronation chicken or smoked salmon finger sandwiches alongside lemon cake one day, then dainty cucumber or ham plus slices of chocolate cake the next. Fresh homemade
scones and a choice of three Champagnes by the glass are fixtures, however. The old-school experience breaks with British tradition for a sweet-toothed children’s version featuring PB&J
sandwiches, cupcakes and hot chocolate. Tea is also served on the Wood Deck in the garden from May to September.
