Set up by one-time Michelin-starred chef Aiden Byrne and his wife, this renovated hostelry next door to Lymm church now runs as a self-styled ‘British grill’ rather than a gastropub, with a
suitably relaxed, sophisticated look – think chunky wooden tables, neutral colours and high-backed leather chairs. Chops, steaks and burgers cooked over coconut-husk charcoal take centre stage, but
Byrne’s head chef also leavens his menus with nostalgia and tricksy touches – from honey-glazed gammon and fish pie with a poached egg to pea mousse with Yellison goats’ cheese, lemon emulsion and
sourdough or passion-fruit Arctic roll with mango and vanilla salad. Kids have their own menus, there’s breakfast at the weekend and mighty Sunday roasts are carved at the table. Byrne recently
signalled his return to the big time with the high-profile launch of Manchester House in the ‘rainy city’.
