SquareMeal Review of The Barbican Kitchen

Although celeb chef brothers Chris and James Tanner have sold their original self-named Plymouth restaurant, they are still  at the helm of this informal, allcomers’ eatery in the Plymouth Gin Distillery – a showpiece 15th-century building famous as the place where the Pilgrim Fathers convened before setting sail for the New World. It may be an antiquated location, but the restaurant itself is dressed in funky contemporary colours with leather seating, trendy artwork and exposed ventilation pipes. The menu cruises through ‘little dishes’, burgers, dogs, pasta, grills and various items from the stove – so take your pick from, say, chicken and chorizo Caesar salad, wild garlic risotto with mascarpone and wild mushrooms, ‘butchers pork plates’ or seared calf’s liver with horseradish mash. After that, have a ‘final fling’ with rhubarb and custard pannacotta.
