A tiny Japanese-style eatery just by Haymarket station, Sushiya is still easy to miss even though it’s been around since 2005. With small, high tables & stools – plus minimal decor – the
interior is set up for quick lunches or convivial dinners rather than languorous evenings à deux, although the culinary basics are on the button. A set meal for one might bring miso soup followed
by an impressive plate of mixed nigiri & salmon sashimi – spanking fresh & easy on the eye – while the menu proper covers all bases from raw beef sashimi or grilled eel with unagi sauce to
populist plates of chicken tempura or deep-fried tofu. The kitchen also serves up steaming bowls of ramen noodles, all-in rice dishes & the expected array of colourful sushi – best accompanied
by Japanese lager or saké. Booking recommended.
