A lovably eccentric eatery high up on Bledlow Ridge, the Napier has been a fixture of the Chiltern scene since the 1970s – finally picking up its first Michelin star in 2012. Whether you’re here
for a dreamy repast under the pergolas or snug by the fire surrounded by surreal sculptures and crazy curios, a pleasurable time is guaranteed. The menu follows the seasons, with the kitchen taking
a lively, contemporary approach to whatever comes its way: a rich haul of locally bagged game might yield grouse, partridge or woodcock, while Cornish fish could bring halibut with cauliflower
risotto, wasabi arancini and red kale. Desserts such as sticky toffee pudding with banana mille-feuille are a treat, ripe cheeses whiff invitingly, and the seriously considered wine list is a real
cracker. Sadly, ‘offhand’, lackadaisical service can dampen spirits – especially during jam-packed Sunday lunches.
