With dependable wines, an ‘enjoyable atmosphere’ and service that’s ‘amicable and timely’, Gordon Ramsay’s Savoy Grill is no longer the legendary preferred choice of the British Establishment, but
it remains a reliable port of call for business – lauded by its fans as ‘an oasis on the Strand’. That said, the Anglo-European menu can seem ‘rather limited’ with its straightforward selection of
char-grills (including 35-day aged steaks), pies, classic fish specialities and ‘best of British’ favourites such as suckling pig with apple sauce from the trolley. Start with creamy omelette
Arnold Bennett (a dish created at the Savoy), move on to tender braised ox cheeks or veal milanese with anchovy hollandaise, and finish with plum tart accompanied by Barolo ice cream.
Disappointments are not unknown, but pre-theatre menus and Sunday lunch get a resounding thumbs-up from diners. The gorgeously restored surroundings impart an ultra-glamorous 1920s’ sheen, with
sparkling chandeliers, plush banquettes and faux tortoiseshell conjuring the heyday of this well-loved institution.
Having spotted a Time Out special deal for a set menu deal at the Savoy Grill, a friend and I were rather keen to try this out especially since we had heard so much about the renovations that had taken place and the time that it took. The deal turned out to be quite popular and we found it hard to make a suitable booking, but eventually a date was found and finally we were to try the Savoy Grill. We went for an early evening meal, but the evening didn’t start off well with the traffic against us, a late arrival was expected… not good!...

Friend K in town meant that I got to be a London tour guide for a week and ahead of our lunch at the Savoy Grill, my fun fact of the day was: Traffic entering & leaving the Savoy hotel does so by driving on the right - one of the only places in the UK to do so. There’s a good Pub quiz question for you.The Savoy went through a £220m refurbishment a few years ago and while I wasn’t around to do a before/after comparison, the hotel interior is pure glam. Polished marble floors, opulent orchid floral arrangements, gleaming chandeliers and all this simply on the walk to the (Equally impressive) bathroom!...

Offered the Savoy Grill to review, I jumped at it. I was thinking about the Savoy of old, of course, a place of legend. A grown up sort of a place, somewhere you might be taken by your kindly uncle, up from the country to visit his stockbroker and who would repair afterwards to his club, for a snifter and a snooze. If you lived in a 1950’s film that is.According to a 1904 edition of The Times, the Savoy Grill was “where people go to eat a modest luncheon or to dine on the way to the theatre without spending too much time or too much money.” Hmmm. One of those still applies. Guess which?Seen as an extension of No 10, Churchill used to hold Cabinet meetings here and it became a Thatcher favourite. Very male, very con, very trad. A place to see and be seen; politico heaven – never mind the food, smell the power...
