Square Meal Review of Royal Spice ?

Conveniently pitched on the Royal Mile, just five minutes’ walk from Edinburgh Castle, this smart-looking Indian makes an agreeable impression with its big mirrors, elegant furnishings, pictures of the Taj Mahal and a huge digital print depicting Indian spices. The kitchen deploys the aforementioned flavourings for a menu that covers all the familiar curry-house staples from tandooris and tikkas to biryanis, jalfrezis, baltis, kormas and dhansaks – all with a noticeable Punjabi accent. Specials such as Afghan karahi chicken or the weird-sounding chocolate masallam are also worth considering. Set lunch deals (from £6) appeal to the business crowd, while ‘filling-station snacks’ of puri wraps, pakoras and the like can be picked up for a fiver. Popular for parties and private functions too.
