SquareMeal Review of Provender

Bronze Award

Max Renzland’s well-used and well-loved neighbourhood bistro does a grand job of channelling the spirit of a Parisian café without descending into cliché. With its exposed brick walls, charcoal wool upholstery, red metal lights and vintage Editions Rossignol prints, the look is modern yet cosy and genuinely “authentic”. Great-value prix-fixe deals, plats du jour and petit dejeuner options at the weekend will provide everything from eggs mayonnaise and steak-frites to croque monsieur, shakshuka, tartines and pain au raisins. However, the kitchen demonstrates greater originality when it comes to dishes such as sea bass ceviche with avocado, basil and sesame croûtons or braised Vendée rabbit with confit ventreche bacon, asparagus, peas and artichokes, while desserts might venture into the realms of passion fruit pannacotta with mango sorbet and almond sabayon. The French wine list runs from decent vins de maison to more exclusive finds.

I took my mum to Provender for Mothers day. Its a local restaurant but I hadnt been before and was pleasantly suprised. Service was great from start to finish and food good although a little pricey for a local restaurant (on par with West End prices) but didnt put me off making another booking in the future.

Wish I lived nearby
Very highly recommended. As a French national living in London, I found this restaurant like a home away from home. Stunned by how good the food was, and how “french” the offering was. Next time I am homesick, I am planning to save on the Eurostar and head to Wanstead!

I met some friends for lunch at their invitation and was so impressed. I am a vegetarian and ate very well indeed with an interesting choice; for example, did you know that quail's eggs taste like eggs used to many years ago? The creamy celariac soup was to die for. Meanwhile, I was so impressed with the menu in general; it was a joy to read although I don't eat meat or fish. I haven't seen a menu like this in this part of East London/Essex. We are blessed with some very good Italian restaurants but this French menu looks so exciting. There are classic French dishes together with some imaginative additions and the friends with whom I ate tell me that they have enjoyed the food they have had on previous visits. The wine list was reasonably priced and the second cheapest red wine, a merlot from the Languedoc, was delicious. Well worth a visit (looking for a reason to return asap). My only worry is that the very reasonable prices might increase if too many of you agree with me.
