Sailors, smugglers, thieves and pirates have been downing pints of the foamy stuff on this spot for almost 500 years. The combination of olde-worlde atmosphere and riverside views makes it a magnet
for tourists, although this old-timer’s abundant charms elevate it above your regular backpack-and-camera hangout. The current building, dating from the 1770s, feels rather like the inside of a
sailing vessel, complete with ships’ masts supporting the internal structure. Strategically placed placards recount the history, and the menu warms to its theme of ‘Great British pub food’ at
unthreatening prices – think ploughman’s, pies, and fish and chips. To quaff, there are good-value wines and a decent selection of draught ales.
