A Milanese concept brought to London by serial restaurateur Alan Yau, Princi is a seriously popular all-day pit stop for everything from early-morning business meets to post-theatre fill-ups. The
light-filled café does a roaring trade in chic breakfasts, all-too-tempting cakes, savoury pastries and colourful salads, with fresh juices, proper coffee and a good selection of wines and
cocktails to wash it all down. Its ‘casual, slightly chaotic’ atmosphere is well managed by mainly Italian staff dressed in spotless white uniforms, and wherever you find a spot – at one of the
high communal tables or the street-facing counters – there are plenty of opportunities for people-watching. Meanwhile, table service and a menu of excellent wood-fired pizzas (plus a couple of
pastas) beckon in the adjoining restaurant – try the Valerio, with mushroom, ham, mozzarella, cream and basil. Takeaways, too.
I have a love/hate relationship with Princi.I love the casual/slightly chaotic atmosphere, but I hate how there is no real system and how you really do have to hustle in there for a seat on the communal counters plus it is always busy. This Italian cafe was originally created by Rocco Princi who already has a successful chain of cafes in Milan but was brought over here by Alan Yaou who owns Hakkasan, Yauatcha and Busaba Eathai to name but a few...
