This handsome, solid stone building has appeared in a number of guises down the years, including a temperance inn and a tearoom for local mill workers. Today, drink a pint with impunity in the
garden overlooking the moor, or settle into the cruck-raftered bar in front of a cheery wood stove. Chef Steve Arden and his partner Amanda arrived here from the Crown at Roecliffe, and are
enjoying holding the reins. The menu shows bags of enthusiasm: sticky, sweet soy-braised belly pork with lime and sesame seeds on noodles packs a punch, whilst a haddock and pea fishcake with
curried creamed leeks is silky, smooth and mega-comforting on a chilly day. There are pub classics too, but Steve also sneaks in some belters: black bream fillet atop a king prawn, dill and pea
risotto is a perfect plate.
