SquareMeal Review of Old Fire Station

This bright red, gloss-painted eatery on the Isle of Dogs is what happened when the folks from the kebab shop over the way decided to go upmarket. Once a fire station (hence the name & the colour scheme), it’s now a charming bar & bistro that ranks as the best of the local bunch for business & pleasure – even if the cooking doesn’t exactly hit the gastronomic heights. Expect generic Middle Eastern food with some influences from the Eastern Mediterranean: taramasalata, feta & spinach parcels or stuffed vine leaves are good openers, before big salads, hearty stews & baked dishes including lamb tagine, moussaka or stuffed peppers. All that’s missing is a charcoal grill for kebabs – although the assortment of pasta & brunch dishes almost makes up for it. Look for Turkish labels on the very affordable wine list.

Today 29th December 2012 will be my 4th visit to this lovely restaurant. I have been raving about this restuarant to all my friends and family. Good food, drink, deserts and the service is excellent. The restaurant has a lovely cosy feeling about it. The prices are really reasonable, approx £35 a person including drinks. June Barclay

Have just visited this wonderful restaurant. (14 Jul 2012) It is totally unique, in appearance and design. The food was top quality, and the service was impeccable. I visited with my bf who is a London black cabbie and was recommended by one of his passengers. Whilst looking thro the menu, the diners sitting next to us, had their meals served, which looked amazing. I asked what he was eating and he replied the lamb tagine. (he orders the same meal every time) It was out of this world. I would never imagine eating lamb with nuts and fruit.. but it was so tasty. The waiters were attentive, could not fault one thing about our experience. The atmosphere is so cosy and friendly. There are still signs of the old fire station, mixed with a middle east feel. The ceiling is made out of suspended gilt picture frames. We will definately be returning very soon. Well worthy of a 10 out of 10
