Smarter than most Mexican joints in the capital, Mestizo is trying to do something a bit different. Taking its name from the mixed-race descendants of the conquistadores, it offers a fusion of
Mexican & Spanish flavours: begin by ordering some street food for the table (beef empanadas or deep-fried tortillas stuffed with spicy fish), before investigating regional specialities such as
mole huasteco (a grilled chicken dish from Hidalgo served with a spicy chocolate sauce) or piña rellena de mariscos (a scooped-out pineapple filled with seafood & a spicy coriander dressing).
There’s also a huge selection of tortillas, burritos & chimichangas at very friendly prices. Ignore the traffic roaring by on busy Hampstead Road & surrender to the brain-teasing
temptations of myriad Tequilas & Tequila-based cocktails.
Mestizo was a place recommended for a dinner out and a get together with friends. It does not provide your standard run of the mill Mexican food. At Mestizo, you get something that is different and special. It’s not the first time that someone has recommended this Mexican restaurant, so I was more than happy to give it a try!The warm atmosphere is set by its tones of deep reds and browns for the décor. There was a big bar area at one end of the restaurant, displaying all the shelves of spirit bottles! Downstairs, there was also a floor dedicated to private dining.Mestizo has an extensive menu which ranges from small dishes, specials, tacos to the classic chilli chocolate mole dishes. Last night, I was kindly invited by SquareMeal and Nuffnang UK to a food blogger evening at Mestizo to meet some fellow bloggers as well as to enjoy some tequila, mezcal and Mexican food.
